Golden Rule in San Francisco Bay

We arrived in San Francisco Bay last Monday, Sept. 21, International Peace Day.  We spent several days docked at South Beach Harbor near Giants Stadium.

While in SF, we had visits from many folks, including Bob Gould of Physicians for Social Responsibility and KPFA’s Dennis Bernstein, whose interview on the Golden Rule was the top story on Flashpoints on Thursday, Sept. 24.

The Golden Rule and her crew then moved to the Berkeley Marina. Jackie Cabasso of Western States Legal Foundation helped us distribute the second press release of our Bay stay, to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, Saturday, Sept. 26. Jackie Cabasso and others went out sailing with us that day.

We have been taking people out sailing almost every day, typically at 10 am and 1 pm, including Quakers, Code Pinkers, and a Japanese peace activist. Others, including some cool young children, have visited with us on the Golden Rule in the marina. Visitors to the Golden Rule are bringing delectable food items to share with our appreciative crew.

KPIX TV was on the boat with us and we hope they aired a report. KCBS radio has covered us. Dennis Bernstein will continue to follow the Golden Rule for KPFA. We hope to attract more media attention and will appreciate any help or suggestions.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, we moved to Sausalito, where we will be docked at Schoonmaker Marina, Dock B, #59 thru the weekend.

Next week we will be back in San Francisco and ready for Fleet Week activities.

We will probably be at the Hyde St. Pier (National Maritime Museum) Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 6-8 (4 nights).  People can tour the boat from 1 pm to 5 pm or call Gerry Condon to get on the list for a morning sail, weather permitting.

Vetetans For Peace is organizing a public event Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 7 pm, at the Veterans Building in San Francisco, on Van Ness at McAllister. There will be a presentation from the crew of the Golden Rule, an update on current antinuclear actions by Jackie Cabasso, and discussion about Fleet Week organizing, past and present.

On Friday October 9 we move to Gashouse Cove for 2 nights. Our intention is to sail in the Bay on Friday during the Parade of Ships, and again on Saturday, the big day. We want to be seen by thousands of people. We will be careful, however, not to do anything that would put the Golden Rule or her crew at risk, legally or otherwise.

We are coordinating with members of Veterans For Peace who will have a table at Pier 41 on Saturday, Oct. 10, with VFP and Golden Rule materials. We will also be talking with other peace activists about coordinating activities during Fleet Week.

On Sunday October 11 we will spend the night close to the Golden Gate Bridge in preparation for a 6:30 am October 12 departure heading toward Noyo Bay.

Finally, we are told that the crew may not have easy access to showers during Fleet Week in SF. So if anybody wants to invite a Golden Rule crew member or two home for a shower and a bite to eat, maybe even a bed for the night, please let me know.

Our final educational / fundraising event before we arrive in Humboldt Bay will be in Ft. Bragg on Thursday October 15 –  time and place to be determined.

Please feel free to call me anytime at 206-499-1220.

Thank you for all your support. We are looking forward to a great week.

Sailing for a Nuclear Free World!
